Pécs & Surroundings
PÉCS, the 2000-year-old city, also meets modern economic requirements
The city of Pécs is with its 160,000 inhabitants the fifth largest city in Hungary and the main city of the region South Transdanubia. Located 400km from the Adriatic Sea, the city offers pleasant climatic conditions and is rightfully called the submediterranean city of Hungary due to its atmospheric streets, outside events on warm summer evenings, and excellent wines of the area.
Strolling through the city one can find witnesses of medieval Christianity, objects from the times of the Ottoman siege, houses adorned with Zsolnay ceramic, and representative examples of Bauhaus architecture. Pécs was the European Capital of Culture in the year 2010. As a result, it offers numerous new institutions: the Kodály Conference- and Concert Centre with its astonishing acoustics, as well as the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, which offers many possibilities for active recreation.
Outside the city, you can find thermal baths for recreation, and you can try the renowned creations of the winemakers in the cellars of the wine region Villány-Siklós. The Mecsek mountains offer possibilities for extensive tours and in surrounding villages you can discover the traditions of folk art.
